Updated June 11, 2025

Travis Ray Thompson, 27, of ⁤Florida, has been sentenced to ‍life in prison for the first-degree murder of 2-year-old Jacklyn Schwingel, his ex-girlfriend’s daughter. The tragic incident, wich occurred in⁤ May 2022, involved severe trauma to the child’s torso and spine.

On may 3, ⁤2022, jacklyn Schwingel⁣ was rushed to a hospital⁣ in critical condition. Despite medical intervention, she died from her injuries. Her mother told Marion County Sheriff’s Office ⁤deputies that she had left Jacklyn in⁤ Thompson’s care before heading to work. Shortly after, she‍ received a call about her daughter’s condition.

According to the ⁣Fifth judicial Circuit ‍State Attorney’s office, Jacklyn was found “lifeless, with a shallow pulse and a distended abdomen.” thompson and the child’s mother transported her ⁢to the⁤ hospital⁢ when she stopped breathing.

Medical staff suspected⁣ internal bleeding, prompting them to alert⁣ law enforcement and the Department of Children⁤ and Families. Thompson claimed he was in another room when he heard a loud noise and found the child unresponsive. “Despite being the ‍only person left with the victim, Thompson claimed he⁤ did not no how the victim became injured,” the attorney’s office stated.

An autopsy determined that jacklyn’s cause of death was “traumatic injuries to the victim’s torso with a severing of her spine and internal bleeding behind her abdomen.” The medical examiner concluded that ‍notable force was⁣ applied to the child’s body, bending her backward ⁢beyond her natural range of motion until her back broke.

Thompson was subsequently arrested and charged. Prosecutors noted that the mother had ended her ‍relationship with Thompson a week before the incident.
