Brady Ebert, a founding member and former guitarist of the Grammy-winning hardcore band Turnstile, has been arrested and charged with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault. The charges follow an incident in which Ebert allegedly used his vehicle to strike the father of the band’s lead singer, Brendan Yates.

The victim, 78-year-old William Yates, is the father of Brendan Yates and a neighbor of Ebert in Silver Spring, Maryland. According to the Montgomery County Department of Police and court records, the incident occurred on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at approximately 4:41 p.m.

Details of the Incident

Authorities report that the incident began as an argument between Ebert and William Yates in the victim’s driveway. Charging documents indicate that William Yates observed a vehicle heading toward his daughter and grandchildren in the driveway while honking its horn, prompting him to rush toward the area.

Police reports state that Ebert struck William Yates with his 2001 Buick before fleeing the scene without contacting emergency services or providing aid. Family members alleged that Ebert drove up to the house, honked and swore, and drove off before returning. Further reports indicate that after Yates threw a rock at the car, Ebert drove into him as he attempted to run away.

Following the collision, Ebert allegedly returned a third time to tell William Yates that he deserved it.

William Yates suffered severe physical trauma to his lower extremities, including a broken bone protruding from his leg. The band Turnstile later confirmed that William Yates is recovering from surgery to treat these injuries.

Legal Proceedings and Arrest

The Montgomery County Police Department utilized surveillance footage from a neighbor’s security camera and the discovery of Ebert’s vehicle to obtain an arrest warrant. Ebert, 33, was taken into custody on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

During his court appearance, Ebert protested his innocence, claiming that surveillance footage would contradict the statements made by his accusers. However, Montgomery County district court judge Sherri D Koch described the alleged attack as violent and targeted.

Ebert is currently being held without bond at the Montgomery County Central Processing Unit. Jail records indicate he is awaiting a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 1, 2026. His attorney, Andrew Alpert, has declined to comment on the matter.

History with Turnstile

Brady Ebert was a childhood friend of Brendan Yates and a founding member of Turnstile when the group formed in 2010. He remained with the band through its rise to international prominence and its Grammy-winning success until his departure in 2022.

While the band’s initial announcement of his exit in August 2022 expressed gratitude for their time together and wished him the best, a subsequent statement provided to EW detailed a more strained separation.

Turnstile explained that it cut ties with Brady Ebert in 2022 in response to a consistent pattern of harmful behavior affecting himself, the band, and the community.

Statement to EW

The band further stated that they had exhausted available resources to support his access to help and recovery, but eventually set a boundary when healthy communication became impossible and Ebert began threatening violence.
