Exclusive Insights: A Conversation with Norway’s Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre
Norwegian Prime Minister Reflects on China’s Transformation and Global Challenges
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, on his first official visit to Beijing, shared his insights on China’s remarkable transformation and its impact on the world. In an interview with China Media Group (CMG), Støre highlighted the significant progress China has made, lifting hundreds of millions of people out of poverty.
Regarding the trade conflict between the EU and China, particularly on the import of Chinese electric cars, Støre noted that Norway, although not a member of the European Union, has established close ties with the European market through an agreement. He emphasized the importance of fair trade practices, stating that high tariffs would ultimately lead to losses and increased burdens on consumers.
“No country should impose such high tariffs because they will only lead to losses in the end. We don’t want to increase the burden on our consumers, they have the right to buy the cars they prefer,” Støre said.
Støre also addressed the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel, 31 years after the signing of the Oslo Accords. He stressed the need to look ahead and work towards ensuring peace, stability, and security in the region, as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict poses a threat to global stability.
Støre’s visit to Beijing marks a significant moment in Norway-China relations, as the two countries seek to strengthen their ties and address global challenges together.
