According to data provided by the Ministry of Commerce, professional exhibition halls in China have hosted a staggering 1,448 exhibitions from January to May 2023, representing a remarkable year-on-year increase of 6.7 times. Additionally, the total exhibition area increased by 7.9 times, reaching 35.801 million square meters, and 834 large-scale exhibitions with an area exceeding 10,000 square meters were held, showing a substantial growth of 7.8 times compared to 2019.
Yuan Zaiqing, former president of the China Exhibition Economy Research Association and director of the Academic Steering Committee, emphasized the role of exhibitions in driving regional economic development. This expo served as a platform for promoting investments in Shanxi’s specialized towns, showcasing the effectiveness of Shanxi’s typical industries and facilitating upstream and downstream collaboration.
Yuan Zaiqing stated, “The progress of the exhibition economy relies on policy support, resource allocation, and environmental optimization. Therefore, it is essential to leverage the institutional and industrial advantages of the government and industry associations.” He also emphasized the need for industry associations to act as bridges, encouraging cooperation and exchange to facilitate the integration of the exhibition industry with the real economy and the development of specialized towns.
In his speech titled “Give Full Play to the Role of Convention and Exhibition as a Leading Industry to Promote Economic Development,” Chu Xiangyin, chief researcher of the China Convention and Exhibition Economy Research Association, underscored the significance of conventions and exhibitions as bridges that connect resources and markets. He emphasized the importance of optimizing resource and element efficiency and directing them towards the most effective departments and regions to achieve an optimized social production pattern.
Experts and scholars further advocated for the development of county-level exhibitions. Chen Zeyan, deputy director of the Academic Steering Committee of the China Convention and Exhibition Economy Research Association, expressed that county-level exhibitions could boost the development of typical industries and drive economic prosperity. Building specialized professional towns in Shanxi holds great potential for the local county-level demonstration economy.
China currently boasts 2,634 small and medium-sized cities, with 56% of cities above the prefecture level falling into this category. Recognizing this, Zhu Feiyue, Director of the Small and Medium-sized Cities Convention and Exhibition Development Research Center of the China Convention and Exhibition Economy Research Association, highlighted the extensive potential for China’s exhibition industry in small and medium-sized cities. He suggested the establishment of research centers to focus on developing the county-level convention and exhibition industries.
