Artist Kim Seon-hee’s solo exhibition “Reality, Reality of Reality” opened on Thursday, April 11 at Rawin Gallery. In this exhibition, artist Sunhee Kim observes and collects the appearance of light and presents the results of her sampling in the form of a three-dimensional sculpture. Light, which controls time and dissolves space, is actually real, but its original reality is not visible, so we often forget the existence of light even if we begin and end our daily lives with light. However, the author reveals that light, as a medium that illuminates objects, is always present in the previous process of achieving sensation and cognition.
《Reality, the reality of substance》 is a space that synaesthetically embodies the phenomenon of light observed from various perspectives. Here, the author tries to evoke a new perspective on life through the results of examining the reality and behavior of light.

Sunhee Kim’s work begins by looking at the light that first reaches the surface and becomes the ‘conductor’ of all phenomenological possibilities. The reason why the artist persistently explores light is to expand the “volume and strength of the senses” by shifting the perspective focused on purpose and achievement at various points in the “moment”.
We know that light is the most important prerequisite for the interrelationship between eyes and matter, but since we cannot see or touch light, we always reach the goal of “seeing” first rather than the momentary processes of perceiving light. However, Sunhee Kim’s work captures the moment when light expresses various impressions about a phenomenon, both as a medium and sometimes as a subject, and explores the truth that can only be discovered in this moment.
To persuade this principle, artist Seonhee Kim transfers the light brought into various situations in the form of other senses other than sight. Using media such as Korean paper or stretch fabric, the visual sense of light is translated into synesthetic entities such as touch and hearing.

Furthermore, the audience’s actions have more authority and potential within the complex spatial elements of the Lain Gallery, and the expansion of senses and possibilities is sought through the exhibition method of “audience participation”. For example, the first-floor gallery space features a variety of views from the basement and viewpoint, natural light streaming through the skylight, and a circulation line that allows for sitting and standing. The work was modeled here, allowing the audience to experience the layering of light and was designed to allow people to immerse themselves in the phenomenon.
Furthermore, in the exhibition hall on the second floor, where the viewer’s attention is focused on the work through the structure of a white cube, the artist has created a prism work whose results can be modified by the variable of public participation, so that the direction, speed and color of the light vary depending on the audience. It was translated clearly. Finally, on the third floor, which consists of a lounge space, Korean paper works are placed and, as the audience flips through a page of Korean paper, the shape of the light is translated organically through the texture and rustle of the paper. the Korean newspaper.

Eunyoung Cho, curator of Rahuin Gallery, said: “This exhibition records a fleeting collection of moments of the sensory process that originates from light, allowing us to participate in the moment of the phenomenon as a subject rather than a recipient, actually looking at the moment and experiencing the moment: “It leads us to perceive that the reality of life exists here,” he said.
