Exploring Su Shi’s ‘Night Tour of Chengtian Temple’ and the Artistic Conception of Romantic Culture

“What night is there without a moon? Where is there no bamboo and cypress? But there are few idle people like the two of us.”

This is the location of the evening conversation around the firewood in the “2023 Year End Lecture” A sentence from Su Shi’s “Night Tour of Chengtian Temple” shared by Wanwan and Haoyuan resonated with the guests at the spot and’ r place. Fu Sheng lamented that our culture is very romantic. Kong Xiangdong believes that this is a time-traveling “night talk around the stove”.

So what they mentioned

What kind of artistic conception is being described? Let’s understand the full text of Su Shi’s “A Night Tour at Chengtian Temple”.

On the night of October 12th, the sixth year of Yuanfeng, I took off my clothes and was about to fall asleep, and when the moonlight came into my house, I set off happily. Thinking of nothing and being happy, I went to Chengtian Temple to look for Zhang Huaimin. Huai Min also stayed up and walked together in the atrium. Below the courtyard, the sky is clear as if water has accumulated, and the water is covered with the shadows of algae and cypress. What night has no moon? Where there is no bamboo or cypress? But there are few idle people like the two of us.

Vernacular translation:

On the night of October 12, the sixth year of Yuanfeng (AD 1083), I took off my clothes and was about to go to bed when I suddenly saw moonlight shining from the window. So I got up excited and ready to go out to admire the moon.

Considering that happiness alone is not as good as happiness among all, I immediately ran to Chengtian Temple and knocked on Zhang Huaimin’s door. Fortunately, he hasn’t slept yet. So, we both went to the middle of the courtyard to enjoy the moon.

The moonlight shines on the ground in front of the court, like a pool of water, clear and empty. The algae and water lilies are crisscrossed among them. In fact, they are not real algae and water lilies, but reflections of cypress and bamboo.

What night is there without a bright moon? Where is there no bamboo and cypress? But opportunities like tonight rarely come around. Right now, we both feel the same way.

In this way, Su Shi’s evening visit to Zhang Huaimin is like our evening conversation around the fire today.

Tonight at 7:00, come chat around the stove to find your Zhang Huaimin!
