The sea fare per 2 TEU for containers departing from Korea and going to the western United States was 3,099,000 won in December 2019 and 4.3 million won in December 2020, but it increased sharply last year and exceeded 10 million won.
In the process of recovering after a significant contraction in global freight volume due to COVID-19, problems such as freight rate increases and transportation delays arose.
The average declared freight rate for sea export containers to the eastern United States last month was 13,967,000 won, up 256.8% from a year ago, and the freight to the European Union (EU) was tentatively counted to 1,142,000 won, up 279.6% from a year ago.
China, which has a relatively short travel distance, recorded 1.134,000 won, up 125.0% from a year ago, and Japan’s 943,000 won, up 19.6%. The export fare to Vietnam was 1,915,000 won, up 97.3% from a year ago.
Since last month, the Korea Customs Service has been disclosing statistics on container shipping rates from Korea. This is the data that calculates the average value for each route by refining the fare information on the export declaration submitted by Korean companies to the Korea Customs Service when exporting.
