Extinct Human Species Lived in a Brutal Desert, Study Finds
Chimpanzees thrive in African rainforests, orangutans in Indonesian jungles, and humans? We’ve made homes in nearly every corner of the planet, from icy tundras to towering mountain peaks. For decades, scientists have viewed this adaptability as a defining trait of modern humans, a marker of our evolved brains. But a new study suggests we might not be as unique as we thought—our ancient relatives, Homo erectus, were masters of survival in extreme environments long before us.
More than a million years ago, Homo erectus, an extinct species of early humans, thrived in a harsh desert landscape in what is now northern Tanzania. This challenges the long-held belief that only Homo sapiens had the ability to adapt to such unforgiving conditions. “It’s a significant shift in the narrative of adaptability, expanding it beyond Homo sapiens to include their earlier relatives,” said Julio Mercader, an archaeologist involved in the study.
The research focused on a site called Engaji Nanyor, a region that has yielded a wealth of hominin fossils. For hundreds of thousands of years, the area was a comfortable open woodland. But around one million years ago, the climate shifted dramatically, transforming the landscape into an arid desert akin to the Mojave. This would have been a daunting challenge for early hominins, yet Homo erectus not only survived but flourished.
“Their greatest asset was their adaptability,” Dr. Mercader explained. These ancient humans adapted their hunting and scavenging strategies, taking advantage of fleeting water sources that appeared after storms. They didn’t just drink from these temporary ponds and streams—they hunted the animals that gathered there, butchering carcasses in large numbers.
Homo erectus also refined their tool-making techniques, crafting sharper stone tools and carrying them for future use. “They may have had strategies where they basically say, ‘This is a good tool. I should bring it with me and be ready if we find food,’” said Paul Durkin, a geologist who contributed to the study.
The site at Engaji Nanyor lies at the southern edge of a vast desert belt that once stretched across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. This adaptability may have paved the way for Homo erectus to expand beyond Africa and into other continents.
The findings align with other research into early human evolution, including climate models that reconstruct the environments in which hominins lived. These studies suggest that Homo erectus thrived in conditions once thought too extreme for any species except modern humans.
“We’re starting to see a consistent story,” said Elke Zeller, a climate scientist unaffiliated with the study. “To truly understand our adaptability, we need to look further back in time.”
This research reshapes our understanding of early human resilience, showing that the ingenuity and adaptability we pride ourselves on may have deep roots in our evolutionary past.
