FIA Releases Formula 1 Penalty Guidelines for Increased Transparency
Formula 1’s governing body, the FIA, is enhancing transparency regarding how race officials determine penalties during race weekends. The move comes after scrutiny of several penalty incidents.
The FIA made public two documents designed to aid stewards in making fair and consistent decisions. These are the Formula 1 Penalty Guidelines and the formula 1 Driving standards Guidelines, now available on the FIA website. The goal is to clarify the role of stewards and promote consistent application of rules.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem said the stewards perform a complex task with passion and commitment, often facing unwarranted criticism. He added that publishing the guidelines will give fans and media a deeper insight into decision-making in Formula 1. The role of the penalty guidelines has been a core tool for almost a decade.
mercedes driver George Russell, director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, welcomed the move as a “useful step” toward greater transparency. He hopes it will give the media and fans a clearer understanding of the rules and how stewards reach their decisions. Understanding the role of these guidelines is key to understanding F1 officiating.
The declaration comes as the Austrian Grand Prix marks the anniversary of a notable incident between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. Verstappen received a penalty after a collision during their battle for the lead.
Another incident occurred at last year’s United States Grand Prix, involving Norris and verstappen. Norris overtook Verstappen, but officials ruled he gained an advantage by leaving the track, resulting in a five-second penalty for Norris.
The driving standards guidelines address overtaking, stating that a driver overtaking on the inside of a corner must have their front axle at least alongside the mirror of the other car prior to the apex, drive in a controlled manner, and take a reasonable racing line within track limits.
Overtaking on the OUTSIDE of a corner:
To be entitled to be given room, including at the exit, when overtaking on the OUTSIDE, the overtaking car must:
i) Have its front axle AHEAD OF THE FRONT AXLE of the other car AT THE APEX.
ii) Be driven in a controlled manner from entry,to apex, and to exit.
iii) Be able to make the corner within track limits.
What’s next
The FIA’s publication of these guidelines is expected to foster greater understanding and acceptance of race officiating decisions within the formula 1 community.
