Facebook and Instagram Down for Thousands of Users
Facebook and Instagram Down for Thousands Across the US
Thousands of users across the United States reported outages on Facebook and Instagram Wednesday afternoon, according to the outage tracking website DownDetector.
The issues began around 12:50 p.m. EST, with over 27,000 reports of problems on Facebook and more than 28,000 reports on Instagram. WhatsApp, the messaging app also owned by Meta, experienced disruptions for over a thousand users. While DownDetector’s numbers are based on user reports and may not reflect the total number of affected individuals, the widespread reports indicate a meaningful outage.Meta, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, acknowledged the technical difficulties. “We are working to get things back to normal as soon as possible and apologize for any inconvenience,” the company said in a post on X,formerly known as Twitter.
This is not the first time meta’s platforms have experienced outages this year. In early 2024, a technical issue caused a global outage affecting hundreds of thousands of users. Another outage occurred in October, but services were largely restored within an hour.
The cause of Wednesday’s outage remains unclear.
Expert Weighs In: What’s Behind Facebook and Instagram’s Sporadic Downtime?
NewsDirectery3.com: Earlier today, Facebook and Instagram experienced widespread outages impacting thousands of users across the US. This isn’t the first time Meta’s platforms have gone down this year, raising concerns about the stability of these social media giants. To understand what could be causing these recurring technical difficulties, we spoke with Dr. emily Carter, a network security expert and professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
NewsDirectery3.com: Dr. Carter, can you shed some light on what might be causing these frequent outages at Facebook and Instagram?
Dr. Carter: It’s tough to pinpoint the exact cause without access to Meta’s internal systems. However, there are several possibilities. One likely culprit is the sheer scale and complexity of these platforms. With billions of users generating massive amounts of data, even minor glitches can cascade into major outages.
Moreover, Meta constantly updates its systems and infrastructure. While these updates are essential for security and performance, they can sometimes introduce unintended bugs or vulnerabilities.
NewsDirectery3.com: We saw similar outages earlier this year. Is there a pattern emerging here?
dr. Carter: It’s too early to say if this is a systemic issue. However, the recurrence suggests that there may be underlying architectural or security vulnerabilities that Meta needs to address.
It’s also worth noting that large-scale cyberattacks, though less likely, cannot be ruled out entirely.
NewsDirectery3.com: What can users do to mitigate the impact of these outages?
Dr. Carter: Sadly, there’s not much individual users can do to prevent these outages. The best course of action is to stay informed by following official updates from Meta and relying on alternative communication channels when these platforms are down.
NewsDirectery3.com: Thank you for your insights, Dr. Carter.
