FacMed athletes compete in University Games 2027

Delegation Roster and Opening Ceremony at Estadio Olímpico Universitario

The opening ceremony marked the formal start of the competitions, recognized the participation of schools and faculties, strengthened the sense of university identity, and promoted fair play values. Dr. Gabriela Borrayo Sánchez, general secretary of the Faculty of Medicine, attended the inauguration alongside student representatives to emphasize institutional support for high-performance collegiate athletics, while also acknowledging the effort, consistency, and commitment shown in combining academic demands with high-level sports practice.

Ana Lorena Álvarez Ballesteros served as the flag bearer for the delegation. The roster comprises students pursuing degrees in Médico Cirujano, Fisioterapia, Neurociencias, and Ciencia de la Nutrición Humana, who shared their expectations and the importance of sports in their personal and professional development.

Volleyball and Flag Football Teams Target Championship Goals

Andrea Borges and Ariadna Izquierdo, both Médico Cirujano students, stated that the women’s volleyball squad aims to recapture the championship they won two years ago. The team practices twice weekly with additional weekend matches to rebuild their gold-medal form. Andrea Borges noted that she has practiced the sport since high school because it represents a safe space and teaches teamwork essential for her career, while Ariadna Izquierdo noted that the discipline required on the court directly benefits her medical studies.

In flag football, student athletes Ángel Trejo Ruiz, Lía Ibarra Sánchez, Natalia López Falcón, and Maite Reyes Jiménez compete for the Faculty. Lía Ibarra Sánchez expressed pride and joy in representing the University and Faculty, aiming to increase visibility and growth for the sport, and Natalia López Falcón highlighted the satisfaction of continuing her favorite sport while pursuing her studies.

Men’s and Women’s Soccer Squads Pursue Historic Finishes

Leonardo Yael Troncoso Breña, a Ciencia de la Nutrición Humana student representing the men’s association football team, stated that the squad’s primary ambition is to reach the tournament final for the first time. Luis Damián Rosales Navarrete, studying Fisioterapia, and goalkeeper Julián Mendoza Ibarra emphasized that collective tactical training remains central to their campaign.

Carolyn Valencia, a Médico Cirujano student on the women’s soccer team, pointed to strong communication on the pitch as the squad’s defining asset after finishing as runners-up in the previous edition of the University Games.

Dr. Gabriela Borrayo Sánchez also emphasized that events like the University Games help make visible disciplines that have grown considerably in recent years and demonstrate that maintaining an integral education within the University is entirely possible.
