Fall from Grace: The Scandal of Ippei Mizuhara and Shohei Ohtani

Otani Shohei’s former translator, Mizuhara Ippei, was involved in gambling and cheating, and reached a plea deal with prosecutors. According to the plea deal reported by ESPN, Mizuhara used his access to Ohtani’s account to pay off gambling debts.

Suwon Ippei even told Otani Shohei that he needed US$60,000 (about NT$1.94 million) to see his teeth Otani Shohei arranged to give Suwon Ippei a check, which was drawn from a business account. However, Mizuhara Ippei pocketed the money and switched to Ohtani Shohei’s debit card to pay for the $60,000 dental bill.

Ippei Mizuhara initially told ESPN that Shohei Ohtani sent him money to help him pay off debts, but later changed his story and claimed that Shohei Ohtani knew nothing about his gambling or money transfers. Shohei Ohtani’s lawyer claimed that Shohei Ohtani was the victim of a “massive theft.”

The report pointed out that Ippei Suwon had deceived Shohei Otani many times, including changing his bank account contact information so that he could contact the bank directly with Ippei Suwon. According to the plea deal, he did this at least 24 times.

Suwon Ippei has pleaded guilty to bank fraud and filing false tax returns.
