Family Mart Opens First Clothing Store in Tokyo
FamilyMart Opens a Dedicated Clothing Store – and It’s a Sign of the Times in Japan
FamilyMart, the popular Japanese convenience store chain, has taken a surprising step by opening a dedicated brick-and-mortar store for its “Convenience Wear” clothing line in Tokyo’s Shibuya district. This marks a new direction for the brand, aiming to elevate itself beyond just a place to grab a speedy snack or drink.
What’s Unique About the Store?
Unlike the typical experience of finding Convenience Wear items packaged and sealed within the convenience store, this new shop allows customers to try on the clothes. Samples are hung up, and a mirror is provided so shoppers can feel the materials and check the sizes before purchasing. The store also features a presale of items from the upcoming fall/winter line.
The Vision Behind Convenience Wear
The clothing line is spearheaded by Hiromichi Ochiai, an award-winning fashion designer who even designed the costumes for Japan’s segment of the Rio Olympic Games closing ceremony. He’s taking on the challenge of transforming FamilyMart into more than just a convenience store.
Why Now?
This move comes at a time when the Japanese convenience store industry is facing challenges. Competition is fierce, requiring constant expansion and 24/7 operation, which is straining a shrinking labor market. Rising costs of goods, like the doubling in price of rice balls, are also causing customers to question the value of convenience.
This new store and the focus on fashion could be FamilyMart’s attempt to differentiate itself and attract customers in a changing market.
