Medical thriller faces scrutiny from family doctor
Updated June 21, 2025
Thad brigham, eager too share his creative work, recently presented the first chapter of his new medical thriller to his daughters. The scene was set for a cozy family critique, but the discussion quickly turned into a debate about the balance between accuracy and inspiration in fiction.
Brigham’s daughter Maddie,a newly minted family doctor, didn’t hold back. As she read aloud, she questioned the plausibility of certain medical scenarios, challenging her father’s creative liberties. Her sister Avery, pregnant and working on a jigsaw puzzle, listened in.
“You can’t just make up credentialed physicians with… implausible backstories,” Maddie said, critiquing a character. She later questioned a scene involving a 20-year-old medical student performing an emergency C-section in a tent, calling it “bonkers.”
Thad, though, defended his approach. He argued that his work was fiction, not a documentary, and that inspiration should take precedence over strict adherence to medical accuracy. He said his writing captured the essence of medical experiences.
Maddie conceded that her father should not abandon the project but suggested additional research. She said fact-checking could enhance the story’s credibility.
