The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. At the hospital located at 5140 North California Avenue in the Ravenswood neighborhood. Two officers were shot during an encounter with a suspect who had been taken into custody earlier and brought to the hospital for medical evaluation.
One officer, a 38-year-old 10-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital after being shot in the head. The second officer, a 57-year-old with 21 years of service, remains in critical condition following the shooting.
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling confirmed the deaths and injuries during a news conference after 4 p.m., stating that the fallen officer was from the 17th District. He described the event as a “real difficult moment for our city” and emphasized the risks officers face daily.
Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed grief over the loss, saying, “You know, our officers stand in the way of harm every single day…They have family that expect them to come home. One of our officers will not be able to return to their family.”
A suspect was taken into custody after a manhunt involving law enforcement swarming the hospital and surrounding area. Residents in the vicinity were advised to shelter in place during the operation. The individual had been arrested on robbery charges and brought to the hospital’s emergency room prior to the shooting.
According to hospital officials, the suspect was screened upon arrival and escorted by law enforcement at all times as required by safety protocols. Despite these measures, he was able to access a weapon and fire on the officers before being subdued.
Endeavor Health confirmed in a statement that the hospital campus was placed on lockdown immediately following the incident, with law enforcement maintaining a strong presence throughout the afternoon. A weapon was recovered when the suspect was taken into custody.
The shooting has prompted an ongoing investigation into how the suspect obtained a firearm despite being under police escort and subjected to security screening. Authorities have not released further details about the suspect’s identity or potential motives.
