Father Stabs Son in Gwangju: Death After Taser Incident Under Investigation

At around 5.50pm yesterday, an urgent 112 call was received from an apartment complex in Yangsan-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju.

The story states that Mr. A, a man in his fifties, stabbed his son in his thirties with a weapon.

District police officers who arrived at the scene immediately began to arrest Mr. A, but when Mr. A did not put down the weapon, they fired a Taser gun.

Mr A, who was hit with two Taser electrode needles on his buttocks and back, was subdued within two minutes.

The son, seriously injured after being stabbed in the shoulder, chest and side with a weapon brandished by Mr A, was taken to a university hospital and underwent surgery.

The son was reported to have no life-threatening injuries, but he did not immediately regain consciousness.

The police arrested Mr. A on suspicion of attempted murder and took him to the police station within about 40 minutes.

However, two minutes after arriving at the police station, Mr. A, who was about to be interrogated, suddenly showed symptoms of breathing difficulty and began to lose consciousness.

The police performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and called an ambulance to take Mr A to hospital.

However, Mr A, who arrived at hospital at around 6.55pm, died around 30 minutes later.

Police examined medical records and requested an autopsy from the National Forensic Service, stating: “There is a statement that Mr A had chronic cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, during his life.”

We also intend to investigate whether there is a causal relationship between the use of the Taser gun, the arrest and transport process and Mr. A’s death.

Furthermore, we believe that the deceased, Mr. A, recently experienced conflict with his family and we are investigating the exact circumstances of the incident.

However, since Mr A, who was caught red-handed, has died, it appears that the case will be closed with “no right to proceed”.

A police official said: “There is a time gap of more than 30 minutes between the time Mr A was hit by the Taser and the time he lost consciousness after arriving at the police station,” and added: “I believe that the exact cause of death will be known only after the publication of the autopsy results.”
