Vincent Kompany’s future at FC Bayern Munich remains a topic of intense speculation despite his recent contract extension and public commitments to the club. While Kompany has emphasized his focus on Bayern’s current project, ongoing links to Manchester City continue to fuel debate about a potential return to the Etihad Stadium in the coming years.

According to reports from German media outlet FCBinside, Kompany has addressed the persistent rumors linking him with a move to Manchester City, particularly should Pep Guardiola depart the club. The Belgian manager acknowledged the flattery of being linked with his former club but stressed that his full attention remains on FC Bayern’s sporting development and long-term vision.

“I’ve said often enough that I’m not here to comment on Uli Hoeneß’ statements. I have a lot of respect for him but I won’t be doing that. In football you can never think too far ahead,” Kompany said in response to discussions surrounding Guardiola’s endorsement of him as a potential successor at Manchester City.

Despite the external interest, Kompany’s position at Bayern appears secure for the immediate future. In October 2025, he signed an early contract extension that runs until 2029, a move described by Bayern patron Uli Hoeneß as a clear commitment to the joint path and a safeguard against poaching attempts from other clubs. Notably, the agreement does not include an exit clause, strengthening Bayern’s position in negotiations and signaling to suitors like Manchester City that any approach would face significant obstacles.

The absence of a release clause was highlighted as a key factor in deterring potential suitors. As reported by FCBinside, this contractual detail puts Bayern in a comfortable position and shows interested parties the limits at an early stage. While Manchester City remains interested in Kompany — particularly as a long-term succession plan should Guardiola leave — the lack of an exit option makes a short-term move unlikely.

Additional signals suggest Kompany and his family are settled in Munich. Reports indicate he has put his villa near Manchester up for sale, a property dating back to his playing days at City. According to The Sun, cited in FCBinside’s coverage, the sale is motivated by Kompany and his family feeling at home in Munich and planning to remain in the Bavarian capital for the long term.

Guardiola has previously expressed confidence in Kompany’s abilities, stating during Bayern’s managerial search process that he believes the Belgian would one day succeed him at Manchester City. Kompany played for City for eleven years and served as captain, shaping an era under Guardiola’s leadership. However, he has consistently deflected questions about a future reunion, insisting on his focus to the present challenge at Bayern.

Bayern’s leadership, including Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, consulted with Guardiola before appointing Kompany following Thomas Tuchel’s departure after the 2023/24 season. Guardiola’s vote of confidence played a role in the decision, though Kompany has made clear that he views his current role as a long-term commitment rather than a stepping stone.

As of April 2026, Kompany continues to lead FC Bayern with an emphasis on team spirit, tactical development and sustaining the progress made since his arrival. While the speculation surrounding a potential Manchester City return persists — especially given the club’s interest in planning for life after Guardiola — the combination of contractual stability, personal commitments, and Kompany’s own statements suggests that any such move remains distant, if not unlikely in the near future.
