bitburger Cup Semifinals: Underdog Teutonia Weiden Faces Viktoria Cologne

WURSELEN, ⁢Germany (April 2, 2025) – FC Teutonia⁢ Weiden, a ‍Central Rhine League team, will host third-division FC Viktoria Cologne tonight in‍ the ⁤Bitburger Cup semifinals. For Weiden, ‍this marks uncharted⁢ territory, as they’ve never advanced this ⁢far in the competition. Viktoria Cologne, on the other hand, faces a relatively unknown opponent.

Viktoria Cologne Aims for⁢ Final Berth

franz Wunderlich, Viktoria Cologne’s vice president, admitted he has no recollection⁤ of ⁤ever facing Teutonia Weiden during ⁤his extensive career. “We absolutely⁣ want to go to the final ⁢and will take this game absolutely seriously,” Wunderlich saeid.

Despite Weiden’s recent struggles, including a 21-0 loss to Blau-Weiß Königsdorf, Wunderlich insists his ‍team won’t underestimate⁤ the home side. ‍Viktoria Cologne is expected to field its strongest lineup, potentially including top scorers Serhat Güler and Tyger Lobinger, each with 13 league goals. German U-19 international Said El Mala is also available ‍after recovering from a muscle injury.

Viktoria Cologne’s recent league form has been inconsistent. A ⁢3-1 loss to FC Ingolstadt has dampened their hopes of promotion⁤ to the 2nd Bundesliga, prompting coach ⁣olaf Janßen to concede that a top-two finish‍ is unlikely. Though, the dream of playing the Bitburger Cup final at their⁤ home ground, the Höhenberg sports park,on May 24,remains a strong motivator.

Teutonia Weiden: A cup Run Against the Odds

Weiden coach Cayan Zenk has stated his team will not simply sit back and defend, even ⁣against⁣ a team from a higher division.Their cup run has‍ included a 1-0 victory over Borussia Lindenthal-Hohenlind, a 5-2 win against Königsdorf, and a 2-1 triumph over SSV Merten.

Heinz-Günter Schalge, Weiden’s managing ⁢director, acknowledges ⁣their underdog status.”We have never stood in the semi-finals and are now meeting an extremely strong third division team. It is clear that we are an absolute outsider,” ⁤Schalge said. He anticipates a crowd of over 1,000 spectators. A meaningful blow for Weiden is the absence of Niklas Valerius, who is ‍out with a cruciate ligament tear suffered earlier this year. Valerius⁢ scored 26⁤ goals last ⁤season, ⁣contributing significantly to their promotion. Captain ⁣Meik Kühnel and striker Yassine ali gnondi are expected to lead the attack.

Schalge remains grounded, stating,”We don’t think so far. Our chances are minimal and if the surprise succeeds, we are celebrating on the final day.”
