Updated June 07, 2025
Bruno Fernandes, the captain of Manchester United, has reportedly declined a considerable offer from Saudi Pro League’s Al-Hilal. Despite the lucrative deal, Fernandes will remain with Manchester United, a team that finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League during the 2024-25 season.
The offer would have nearly tripled Fernandes’ current salary. British media outlets reported the deal to be in the range of £80 million to £100 million ($108 million to $135 million).
Fernandes was a standout performer for Manchester United last season, scoring 19 goals and providing 19 assists in 57 appearances. He was also named the club’s Player of the Year for the fourth time.
Before Portugal’s Nation League semifinal match against Germany, Fernandes confirmed the discussions. He stated that after speaking with Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim and his family, he decided to stay to compete at a “higher level.”
“There was that possibility, the president of Al-Hilal called me a month ago to ask me about it,” Fernandes said. ”It was a big offer, very ambitious. There was a waiting period for me to think about the future.”
Fernandes added that he would have considered the move if Manchester united had wanted him to leave. However, after speaking with the coach and his family, he decided to remain with the club.
“I spoke to the coach, who really tried to talk me out of it. The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave,” Fernandes said. “I spoke to my wife and family, and she asked me what my personal goals were in my career… It would have been easy to move there, but I want to keep myself at the highest level, playing in the big competitions and I feel capable of it.I am happy with my decision.”
Al-Hilal has not commented on the matter.
Former Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand said on his podcast that Fernandes staying was “the biggest news for me today.”
Gary Neville, another former Manchester United star, told Sky Sports that while a transfer would have been financially beneficial for the club, Fernandes’ importance to the team and his desire to stay will endear him to fans even more.
Fernandes currently earns £250,000 ($338,500) a week. Reports indicate the rejected offer included a wage of £700,000 ($947,650) a week.
What’s next
Fernandes is expected to remain a key player for Manchester united as they aim to improve their performance in the upcoming season and compete for major trophies.
