The Core of Pride: equality, Visibility, and Safety
recent discourse, exemplified by a debate post on August 20, 2025, in Fvn, has regrettably perpetuated harmful stereotypes about Pride celebrations.Claims that Pride is a “sexualized campaign” aimed at children and represents a “culture that has lost sight” are not only inaccurate but actively contribute to fear and stigmatization. Pride, at its heart, is a vital struggle for equality, visibility, and the fundamental right to live openly without fear of hatred or discrimination.
The presence of Pride events in schools and kindergartens isn’t about sexualizing children; it’s about sending a clear, powerful message that all children and families are valued and belong within the community. This inclusion serves as a crucial safeguard against bullying and the marginalization of those who may feel different.
Debunking the Myth of ”Sexualized Behavior”
The assertion that Pride parades feature “half-naked adults in fetish clothes” is demonstrably false, especially in the context of events like the Kristiansand parade in Southern Norway. Participants, including members of Sørlandet BDSM, actively participate by proudly displaying their flag – a striking design of black and royal blue stripes wiht a white center, featuring a red circle containing a white triskelion – and enthusiastically shouting “Happy Pride.”
While some members may choose to express themselves through clothing traditionally associated with BDSM culture, such as leather or lacquer, these are simply articles of clothing, not acts of nudity or sexualization. To characterize this as inappropriate behavior in front of children is a purposeful misrepresentation and a conscious effort to sexualize the situation, shifting blame onto those who are simply expressing their identity.
A Broader Movement: beyond the Parade
Pride is far more expansive than just a parade. It’s a multifaceted movement encompassing concerts, dedicated family zones, thought-provoking debates, inclusive rainbow services, and vibrant cultural events. Even adult-oriented events, like “Club Sinful,” exist alongside these family-amiable activities without compromising the overall message of inclusivity and acceptance.
Reducing Pride to a few stereotypical images ignores the fundamental reason for its existence: the ongoing discrimination and hate crimes faced by LGBTQ+ individuals. This reduction attempts to portray a segment of the population as inherently “disgusting” and undeserving of societal acceptance.
Standing for Values: Consent, Accountability, and Inclusivity
Groups like Sørlandet BDSM participate in Pride to demonstrate that they, too, are part of the diverse tapestry of society. They stand under the rainbow umbrella, acknowledging the unique challenges they face and advocating for values such as consent and accountability – principles that directly counter the accusations of ”boundlessness” leveled against the movement. Pride is a powerful statement of self-affirmation and a demand for a more just and equitable world for all.
