From Delivery Bots to Platform Provider: Nuro’s Strategic Pivot
Silicon Valley-based autonomous vehicle startup Nuro has secured an additional $97 million in funding as part of its ongoing Series E round, bringing the total raised in this round to $203 million. The investment, announced Thursday, comes from a mix of new and existing backers, including Nvidia, Icehouse Ventures, Kindred ventures, Pledge Ventures, and existing investor baillie Gifford. Notably, Uber is also participating, following a recent agreement to collaborate with Lucid on a robotaxi service.
This funding round reflects a meaningful strategic shift for Nuro. After facing economic headwinds and a challenging funding landscape in 2022 and 2023, the company abandoned its plans to operate a fleet of its own low-speed delivery robots in 2024. Rather, Nuro is now concentrating on licensing its autonomous driving technology to established automakers and mobility companies, a move that appears to be gaining traction.
Uber and Lucid Partnership Fuels Nuro’s Growth
The most prominent example of this new strategy is Nuro’s partnership with Uber and Lucid. Announced in July, Uber plans to launch a robotaxi service utilizing all-electric lucid Gravity SUVs equipped with Nuro’s self-driving technology. Uber has committed to investing $300 million in Lucid and purchasing at least 20,000 Gravity SUVs over the next six years. Furthermore, Uber is investing a “multi-hundred-million dollar” amount into Nuro itself - an investment reportedly exceeding its commitment to Lucid.
This collaboration demonstrates the growing appeal of Nuro’s technology as a key component in the future of autonomous transportation. The partnership allows Uber to accelerate its entry into the robotaxi market without the significant capital expenditure of developing its own autonomous driving system from scratch.
Nvidia’s Role and Nuro’s Technical Foundation
Nvidia’s investment isn’t simply financial; it’s a continuation of a long-standing technical collaboration.Nuro relies heavily on Nvidia GPUs for large-scale data processing and the training of its AI models. The company’s latest compute model is built on the powerful Nvidia Drive AGX Thor platform, highlighting the importance of specialized hardware in achieving advanced autonomous capabilities.
Financial snapshot and Valuation
to date, Nuro has raised a total of $2.3 billion. While the current Series E valuation stands at $6 billion, this represents a 30% decrease from the $8.6 billion valuation achieved during its Series D round in 2021. This valuation adjustment reflects the broader recalibration occurring within the autonomous vehicle sector,as companies adapt to changing market conditions and investor expectations.
| Funding Round | Date | Amount | Valuation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Series D | 2021 | $600 million | $8.6 billion |
| Series E (Tranche 1) | April 2025 | $106 million | $6 billion |
| Series E (Tranche 2) | August 2025 | $97 million | $6 billion |
Looking Ahead: Scaling Autonomy Through Partnerships
Nuro, which currently employs around 700 peopel, is now focused on forging new commercial partnerships to accelerate the deployment of its autonomous technology on a global scale. According to Nuro co-founder and president Dave Ferguson, the new capital will be instrumental in achieving this goal. The company’s success will likely hinge on its ability to seamlessly integrate its technology into the operations of major automotive and mobility players, paving the way for a future where autonomous vehicles are a commonplace sight on our roads.
