Despite differing styles, Pennsylvania Sens. John Fetterman, a Democrat, and Dave McCormick, a Republican, are finding common ground. The two participated in the Senate Project series,moderated by Shannon Bream,at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute in Boston.
Fetterman, known for his casual attire, and McCormick, who favors suits, represent a critical swing state and are working together on key issues. This bipartisan effort comes as Fetterman faces what he calls a “smear campaign” regarding his health, with some Republicans rallying to his defense.
McCormick, a former U.S.Army officer and Treasury official,brings a different background to the Senate compared to Fetterman,who previously served as mayor of Braddock and lieutenant governor.Despite these differences, the senators are aligned on several issues.
Both Fetterman and McCormick have condemned the recent attack in Boulder, Colo., as an act of antisemitism. They also agree that Iran should not possess nuclear weapons, echoing sentiments previously expressed by former President Donald Trump.
on the proposed Nippon Steel investment in U.S. Steel, both senators initially held different views but ultimately collaborated to secure a deal that protects Pennsylvania workers.
“There’s a number of things we agreed on…the most important thing was the workers in Pennsylvania…the thing we agreed on was [protecting] those jobs in western Pennsylvania,” McCormick said.
McCormick emphasized the importance of finding common ground despite disagreements. Fetterman added that while they may vote differently on some issues, their focus is on achieving wins for Pennsylvania and the nation.
