The Federal Government has released funds for the payment of the eight-month accumulated Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance to eligible non-academic staff across federal tertiary institutions, covering January to August 2026. The disbursement aims to resolve welfare concerns and support industrial harmony within Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
Minister of Education Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa announced the payment on the ministry’s X handle, describing the move as part of the administration’s broader effort to support workers and ensure uninterrupted education delivery, radarr.africa reported. The funding follows the earlier rollout of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) for academic staff covering the same eight-month period in 2026.
Allowance Implementation Across Tertiary Institutions
The current payout fulfills the Federal Government’s implementation of agreements reached with unions representing workers in the tertiary education sector. Discussions with the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) preceded an approved enhanced welfare package that took effect on January 1, 2026, according to official disclosures. That revised structure includes a 35 percent increase in hazard allowances for eligible salary grades alongside adjustments to responsibility allowances.

Additional upward revisions under the package cover laboratory hazard allowances, field trips, teaching practice, industrial supervision, and the Students’ Work Experience Programme. The structural adjustments merged the Provision Tools Allowance directly into the newly funded Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance.
Government Commitments to Sector Stability
Minister Alausa emphasized the critical role non-academic personnel play alongside academic staff in maintaining the stability and daily functioning of tertiary institutions. The release of the Consolidated Non-Academic Staff Tertiary Institutions Allowance is a reflection of the Federal Government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare, strengthening industrial harmony and supporting quality education delivery,
Alausa stated in his announcement.
The minister also commended workers, institutional heads, and unions for their patience. He assured stakeholders that the Federal Ministry of Education will maintain active engagement with unions and institutional leaders to address outstanding issues within the country’s higher education system.
