FIFA officially released the list of match officials selected for the 2026 World Cup on April 9, 2026, unveiling the largest and most diverse officiating squad in the history of the tournament.
The appointed “FIFA Team One” cohort consists of 52 referees, 88 assistant referees, and 30 video match officials. These officials represent 50 Member Associations and all six continental confederations.
The expanded line-up is designed to meet the demands of a groundbreaking tournament format that will feature 48 teams and 104 matches hosted across three countries.
Selection Criteria and Process
The appointments followed a meticulous selection process that spanned more than three years. FIFA utilized a quality first
principle, placing heavy emphasis on the consistency of performances delivered by candidates in domestic and international competitions, as well as at previous FIFA tournaments.
Pierluigi Collina, the chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee and FIFA’s Chief Refereeing Officer, emphasized the elite nature of the selected group.
The selected match officials are the very best in the world. They were part of a wider pool of officials that was identified and monitored over the past three years. They have attended seminars and officiated at FIFA tournaments.
Pierluigi Collina
Collina noted that the performances of the candidates were regularly assessed to ensure they could handle the pressures of the global showpiece.
National and Regional Appointments
England will have six on-field representatives in the tournament. Michael Oliver and Anthony Taylor have been selected as on-field referees, marking the second World Cup for both officials following their participation in the event in Qatar.

Supporting Oliver and Taylor as assistant referees are Gary Beswick, Stuart Burt, James Mainwaring, and Adam Nunn. In the VAR booth, the Premier League will be represented by Australian official Jarred Gillett.
France has also secured a significant presence, with seven referees selected in total. Among them, Clément Turpin and François Letexier have been appointed as central referees.
Other notable European officials selected for the tournament include Felix Zwayer from Germany, Danny Makkelie from the Netherlands, and Sandro Schärer from Switzerland.
Preparation and Support Logistics
To ensure optimal performance, the selected officials will arrive in Miami on May 31. Upon arrival, all officials will participate in a 10-day preparation seminar ahead of the tournament start.
FIFA has implemented a comprehensive support system for the cohort to maintain their physical and mental readiness. This support includes access to fitness coaches, medical staff, physiotherapists, and a mental specialist.
The scale of the 2026 edition, with its increased number of matches and teams, necessitated this expanded and highly supported refereeing squad to maintain the quality and consistency of officiating across all 104 games.
