(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Jang Bo-in = Korean figure skating star Cha Jun-hwan (Korea University) became the first Korean male single player to win a gold medal at the International Skating Union (ISU) Four Continents Championships.

In the men’s single free skating at the 2022 ISU Four Continents Championships held at the Tondilava Ice Hall in Tallinn, Estonia on the 23rd, Cha Jun-hwan recorded 174.26 points with 86.48 TES, 88.78 PCS, and 1 deduction.

In the short program the day before, he scored 98.96, which is his highest personal score, and with a total of 273.22 points, he defeated Japan’s Tomono Kazuki (268.99) and Miura Kao (251.07) to secure the championship.

Cha Jun-hwan is the first Korean male single player to win a medal in the four continents competitions held every year since 1999.

So far, only in women’s singles, Yuna Kim (gold medal) in 2009 and Yoo Young (silver medal) in 2020 have won medals, while Haein Lee (silver medal) and Yerim Kim (bronze medal) took the medals for the 3rd and 4th time in the 2022 competition.

Cha Jun-hwan, who placed fifth in the history of a Korean male athlete at the Four Continents Championships held at the Mokdong Indoor Ice Rink in Seoul in 2020, surpassed himself for the first time in two years.

In particular, the total score of 273.22 is a record that raised the highest score (265.43 points) set at the 2020 Four Continents by 7.79 points.

As the United States and Japan dispatched second-class athletes to this event, top athletes such as Nathan Chen (USA) and Yuzuru Hanyu (Japan) did not participate, but Cha Jun-hwan showed a high-quality performance and further revealed the prospects for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Si-hyeong Lee (Korea University), who participated in the competition together, took 7th place (223.18 points) and Gyeong Jae-seok (Kyunghee University) took 14th place (187.97 points).

Jun-hwan Cha fell while jumping on the quadruple toe loop, the first jump task in free skating, and was judged under rotated (when the number of jump rotations is less than 90 degrees and less than 180 degrees), and his performance score (GOE) was reduced by 3.80 points. .

However, he immediately made up for the mistake by neatly handling the quadruple salcho and triple lutz-triple loop combination jump.

Afterwards, Cha Junhwan gradually regained stability by performing a flying camel spin (level 4) and a step sequence (level 3).

In the triple axel-double toe loop combination jump, the GOE was reduced by 1.17 points due to another underrotated judgment, but the triple axel, triple lutz-single euler-triple salcho combination jump, and triple flip were perfectly digested.

After completing the jump task, he took the choreo sequence (level 1), followed by the change foot sit spin and the change foot combination spin as the highest difficulty level 4, and proudly climbed to the top of the podium.

Lee Si-hyeong, who is about to compete in the Olympics with Cha Jun-hwan, scored 79.13 points in the short program and 144.05 points in the free skating.

Si-hyeong Lee fell heavily in the quadruple salcho, the first jump in free skating, and then fell again while performing triple lutz and was unable to perform a connecting jump.

He made up for his mistakes by attaching a triple toe loop to the triple flip in the second half to complete a combination jump, but his face was filled with disappointment.

Kyung Jae-seok recorded 63.78 points in the short program and 124.19 points in the free skating, setting the ISU-approved personal best in both the short, free and total points, but on this day, he made several mistakes, such as falling while trying to triple axel.
