fiji Announces End to Dengue Outbreak
The Republic of fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services officially declared the end of the dengue fever outbreak in the Western and Central Divisions on August 8, 2025. This decision followed a sustained decrease in reported cases after the outbreak began in the Western Division in February 2025 and spread to the Central Division in April 2025.
Throughout 2025, the Pacific region experienced widespread dengue fever outbreaks, impacting travel plans for manny. Fiji reported a total of 11,599 dengue cases this year.
Ongoing Risk and Prevention
Despite the outbreak’s conclusion, the government of Fiji emphasizes that dengue viruses remain endemic and pose a continuing health risk. Mosquito-borne transmission continues to be a concern for residents and visitors alike.
A new generation of dengue vaccines is available in numerous countries, demonstrating protection against several of the four dengue virus serotypes. Research published in The Lancet confirms the adequate protection offered by these vaccines in a recent study.
Vaccine Availability
As of August 23, 2025, access to dengue vaccines remains limited. Currently, the United States is an exception, with vaccines available only in Puerto Rico.
