Finland Heatwave Thunderstorm Warnings
Finland Swelters as Heatwave Continues,Thunderstorms Loom in Southwest
Finland is experiencing a important heatwave, with widespread hot and sunny conditions dominating the country on Monday. Daytime temperatures are expected to reach or surpass 30 degrees Celsius across much of the nation, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI).
Southwest Braces for Intense Thunderstorms
While much of Finland enjoys the summer warmth, forecasters are issuing warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms in the southwestern regions. Jani Sorsa,an on-duty meteorologist at the FMI,highlighted an elevated risk of strong, localized thunderstorms in this area. The higher humidity in the southwest is contributing to this increased potential for severe weather, which could bring heavy downpours, hail, and lightning.
“if showers do form, they could be quite intense,” Sorsa told the Finnish News Agency STT.”Rainfall could reach up to 30 millimetres per hour in a very short time.”
Dramatic Local Weather Variations Expected
The contrast in weather conditions across the country is expected to be stark. While many areas will bask in sunshine and heat, the southwest could see dramatic shifts due to the developing thunderstorms.
“You could have sunshine all day in one town and, in the next, a violent thunderstorm,” Sorsa explained, emphasizing the localized nature of these weather events. The FMI has consequently issued thunderstorm and heavy rain warnings specifically for these southwestern parts of Finland.
The current hot weather is forecast to persist throughout the week. However, the humid air mass affecting some areas is anticipated to be replaced by drier air by tuesday at the latest.
The summer’s highest temperature so far, a scorching 31.5 degrees Celsius, was recorded in Kaskinen, Ostrobothnia, on Sunday. This record is likely to be challenged as the heatwave continues.
Furthermore, “tropical nights,” characterized by nighttime temperatures remaining above 20 degrees Celsius, are a possibility in southern areas early this week. In contrast, central and northern regions are expected to experience cooler nights with temperatures dipping below 20 degrees, thanks to the influx of drier air.
