An explosion of pyrotechnic material during a patron saint festival in Temascalcingo, Mexico, killed at least 10 people and injured 64 others, according to Mexican authorities cited by the Associated Press and Reuters. The blast occurred on September 6, 2026, next to the Nuestra SeƱora de la Luz church in the central municipality of Mexico State.

Hundreds of residents had gathered near the church to watch a fireworks display honoring the Virgin of the Light during the religious celebration. The force of the explosion caused a wall to collapse, leaving widespread structural damage and thick smoke across the site. A video shared on social media showed dozens of people navigating through debris and smoke in the immediate aftermath to search for survivors.

The municipality of Temascalcingo sits about 160 kilometers, or 100 miles, northwest of Mexico City and has a population of 66,000. Among the 64 injured individuals, a local bishop confirmed that two priests are receiving medical treatment.
