First, let’s learn the basics of “DaVinci Resolve”! Screen configuration and basic settings – “DaVinci Resolve” for working people

In this series, we will tell you how to use the free and highly functional video editing tool “DaVinci Resolve”.

‘DaVinci Resolve’

The “DaVinci Resolve” course is dedicated to those who have to make their own videos at work. Video editing for working people” was the theme of the live broadcast. It seems that many people have already seen it, but if you haven’t yet, check it out from the link.

The content of the distribution is to really try out multi-camera editing, which is expected to become mainstream in businessmen video editing in the future. On the other hand, in this series, we intend to slowly progress from a little more basic.

I believe that the installation of “DaVinci Resolve” is already completed, but before starting the actual editing work, I will arrange the screen and the operation method of “DaVinci Resolve”.

“Project” to organize work

Editing is managed in units called “projects”. When I start making a new video with new material, I create a new project and work within it. In this project, the location of the material files and the “timeline” data described later are stored together. You will manage this project, copy and move it, if you want to resume work on another day, move it to another machine, etc.

Projects manage materials and timelines

The “Project Manager” has management functions such as listing projects, opening required projects, and backing up and saving projects. Start from the “house” icon at the bottom right of the “DaVinci Resolve” screen. Even when creating a new project, creating it from here has the advantage of being able to check the previous project name and serial number, so we recommend starting a new project from the screen[Rheolwr Prosiect].

Locating materials[pwll cyfryngau]

“DaVinci Resolve” has multiple pages, but most of them have an area called “Media Pool”. This is where the materials loaded into the project are displayed in a list. In the middle of editing, this field may change to display a list of “titles” and “effects”, but basically the media pool screen should always be displayed.

You can also create your own folders in the media pool to organize your source files. This unique folder is called “Bin”. It means “place” in English.

Check image status[Gwyliwr]

Each page of “DaVinci Resolve” has a screen[Viewer]where you can check the status of the video. The[Gwyliwr]on most pages is a single viewer that automatically switches between the material in the[Pwll Cyfryngau]and the video in the “Timeline” according to the status of the work Line]is a dual viewer that is displayed side by side.

“Timeline” to create concrete work

Editing is the work of cutting out the necessary parts of the video and arranging them on the time axis. This workspace is the “timeline”. The work will be completed on this timetable.

Any number of timelines can be created within a project. You can easily create two different works using the same material, or create different versions.

You can also insert the previously created timeline into a new timeline to create a nested structure.

“Tracks” for superimposing video and audio on the timeline

The timeline is filled with multiple “rows” for each video and audio. This line is called a “track”. Video has a video track, audio has an audio track, and by stacking different materials, video and audio are synthesized.

Also, in a file where video and audio are recorded at the same time, the video and audio tracks are linked and move. It is also possible to delete this link and edit it by changing the timing of the video and audio.

Make initial settings

When starting “DaVinci Resolve” for the first time, it is necessary to set the preferences. Even if the settings are already completed, let’s check the settings again.

Select Preferences… from the DaVinci Resolve menu to bring up the Preferences dialog. There are many settings here, many of which can be left at their defaults. Once you understand how to use “DaVinci Resolve”, it will be enough to change the settings in detail. Among these, I will check only the parts that I want to check the settings first.

Media storage settings

First, on the screen[Media Storage]in the tab[System]specify a location where you can reserve space for DaVinci Resolve to use automatically. In particular, it is used for cache data to speed up operations, so it is recommended to specify a storage location that is as fast as possible. In most cases, the folder dedicated to videos determined by the OS standard is sufficient, but if there is a separate partition for videos, click[Ychwanegu]here and enter the location.

Automatic saving settings

Then go to Save & Load Projects on the User tab. Please check[Live Save]a[Project Backup]. Save Live saves the state of your work in DaVinci Resolve to your project every time you do something. If DaVinci Resolve crashes for some reason, you can restore your last work by simply reopening the project. However, since the latest state is always overwritten and saved, the history cannot be traced back.

Save settings and load projects

On the other hand, it is[Project Backup]keeps the history according to the time specified below. If it is[Amlder wrth gefn]is set to 5 minutes, the history will be saved every 5 minutes. After 1 hour, it will be sent to[Wrth Gefn Awr]. And the history will be saved again every next 5 minutes. The story of every 5 minutes will not last forever.

Hourly history is kept up to the time specified in[Wrth Gefn Awr]. For example, specifying 5 hours means that 5 backups will be kept. A daily backup is a setting for how many days the history accumulated on the working day is stored. Enter the number of days you can go back.

Once you are done with the settings, let’s save this state by clicking the Save button. After you exit “DaVinci Resolve” and start it again, it will start with the reflected settings.
