Mpox: Overview and Recent Developments

Mpox is a rare disease caused by a virus related to the virus that causes smallpox. This disease mainly occurs in parts of Africa, where transmission often happens through bites from rodents or small animals.

Recently, health officials in the United States confirmed the first case of a new variant of mpox. This variant was first identified in eastern Congo. The infected individual had traveled to eastern Africa and received treatment in Northern California after returning home. Symptoms are improving, and health authorities state the risk to the public is low.

Earlier this year, scientists discovered this new form of mpox in Africa, noting that it spreads through close contact, including sexual activity. Since late September, there have been over 3,100 confirmed cases globally, primarily in Burundi, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Cases have also appeared in Germany, India, Kenya, Sweden, Thailand, Zimbabwe, and the United Kingdom.

Health officials report a stabilization in the situation in Congo. The Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that Congo needs at least 3 million mpox vaccines to control the outbreak. Additionally, they estimate that 7 million more vaccines are needed for the rest of Africa.

This current outbreak differs from the 2022 global outbreak, which predominantly affected gay and bisexual men.

Stay informed about the developments regarding mpox and follow public health guidelines to reduce risks.
