An Alligator in the Shower: Keeping Shula Loose

The prank startled Shula, who confronted his team.Their response: “Coach, you can’t tolerate fun?” The anecdote, recounted by linebacker Nick Buoniconti in an interview with the New York Times, illustrates the unique bond Shula had with his players.
The Dolphins, led by quarterback Bob Griese, went on to defeat the Washington Redskins 14-7 in the Super Bowl, completing their undefeated season.
The following year, the Dolphins defended their title, securing a 24-7 victory against the Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl VIII.

The alligator incident is just one of many stories surrounding Shula, who passed away five years ago. Another tale involves Shula breaking his jaw during a game, only realizing it later when he couldn’t chew his steak at a restaurant.

Griese, who played 11 years under Shula, stated, “Don was the driving force behind everything we achieved. He brought the winning gene to our team and anchored the Dolphins and the city of Miami in the national sports scenery.”

An Unbroken record
