Floodwaters of Despair: 6,000 Sudanese Displaced in a Week – A Humanitarian Crisis Unfolds
Sudan Floods Displace Thousands, Exacerbating Humanitarian Crisis
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported that approximately 6,000 Sudanese individuals will be displaced within a week, bringing the total number of people displaced by heavy rains to over 178,000 since June.
The IOM stated that 119 incidents of heavy rain have been reported between June 1 and September 13, resulting in the displacement of 178,460 people from 15 states in Sudan.
The recent floods, which occurred between September 5 and 13, have displaced around 5,940 people and destroyed approximately 1,349 buildings, either partially or entirely.
According to estimates, 44% of those displaced by the floods were already displaced by conflict before the floods began.
The Sudanese authorities have announced that the death toll from floods and rain has risen to 212 deaths.
Sudan typically experiences rainfall from early June to October each year.
This year’s natural disasters coincide with the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Aid Forces, which has resulted in approximately 18,800 deaths and nearly 10 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.
The UN and international community are increasingly calling for action to prevent a humanitarian disaster in Sudan, where millions are at risk of starvation and death due to food shortages caused by the fighting, which has spread to 13 out of 18 states.
