Florida Trail: 47-Mile Day, Swamps & Road Walking Challenges

Florida Trail Hiker Navigates Swampy Terrain, Long Road Walks

Christmas, Florida – A hiker on the Florida Trail faced a challenging day marked by swampy conditions, extensive road walking and a late-night arrival at a campsite. The hiker, continuing a southbound journey, detailed the difficulties and unexpected kindness encountered along the 47-mile stretch south of Christmas, Florida.

The day began with a sense of exhaustion after a previous day of roughly 32 miles hampered by swampy trails. Despite the shorter distance, the conditions made it feel as long as a typical 38-mile day, with a late arrival at a church fellowship hall in Christmas, Florida, the previous night. The hiker acknowledged the lack of opportunity for rest, noting that significant mileage would be required to create opportunities for recovery.

After waking in the temperature-controlled fellowship hall, the hiker prepared for the day, enjoying a chocolate milk and repackaging cereal into ziplock bags for easy snacking. A mile-long walk back through town included a stop at a gas station for a companion to gather supplies, but the hiker reported having plenty of provisions already.

The trail quickly returned to its challenging conditions, with flooded sections reminiscent of a previous visit in 2023. The hiker recalled wading through knee-deep water to navigate stairs normally used to cross a river, a frightening experience due to concerns about alligators. This time, however, the hiker wasn’t alone, offering a sense of security.

A combination of road walking and dirt roads followed, providing a temporary respite from the flooded trail. The hiker and companion took advantage of a break to remove sand and muck from their shoes at a trailhead pavilion. However, the relief was short-lived, as the trail soon led into a marshy area that had previously caused anxiety due to the potential for alligators.

Reaching a paved road brought a welcome change, allowing feet to dry as the hiker’s trail runners quickly shed moisture. The hiker expressed appreciation for the quick-drying properties of their footwear.

The afternoon brought a humorous stretch of trail that involved walking alongside a highway, even briefly navigating on-ramps while yielding to traffic. This was followed by a long stretch of road walking with limited scenery or rest stops.

A surprising encounter with a local resident, Mike, provided a boost of morale and energy. Mike, who had been following the hiker’s journey online, pulled over to offer snacks and drinks – a gesture the hiker described as “trail magic.” The hiker enjoyed a coke and cinnamon sugar donuts, expressing gratitude for the unexpected kindness.

As the sun began to set, the hiker encountered a deceased alligator on the side of the road. Continuing along the road, the hiker and companion eventually reached a quieter stretch after a long day.

The final miles were completed in the dark, arriving at a designated campsite around 10:45 PM. Discovering another hiker already camped there, the pair opted to backtrack slightly to find a flat spot to pitch their tents, finally resting after a grueling 47-mile day. The hiker expressed hope for a good night’s sleep before facing another long day on the trail.

The hiker encouraged supporters to contribute to their journey through a Venmo link, expressing appreciation for any assistance.
