DeSantis Urges Congress: Adopt Florida’s DOGE Spending Cuts
Updated May 28, 2025
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is calling on House Republicans to take a page from Florida’s playbook and implement “DOGE”-style governance to slash government waste, fraud, and abuse. DeSantis argues that Florida’s executive branch has successfully implemented policies to increase affordability and lower taxes.
DeSantis took to X to express his frustration, referencing Elon Musk’s past efforts with DOGE. He noted the criticism Musk faced for advocating for government efficiency. DeSantis lamented the lack of meaningful spending reductions in Congress, calling it a “betrayal” of voters.

According to DeSantis, his administration has paid down 41% of Florida’s accumulated debt. He contrasted the average Floridian’s share of state debt, which he pegged at $400, with the federal burden of approximately $105,000 per person.
The governor emphasized Musk’s commitment to DOGE, recalling the backlash Musk faced for advocating for fiscal obligation.he questioned why Congress has not implemented any DOGE cuts, despite being well into the year.

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., has voiced similar concerns, claiming that votes on DOGE’s proposed cuts were canceled earlier in May. However, a spokesperson for House Speaker Mike Johnson disputed this claim.
House Republicans were unable to include DOGE cuts in a recent bill because it could only address statutorily “mandatory” spending to pass the Senate. Senate rules also restrict such measures.
Republicans have two options: await a formal rescission request from the Office of Management and budget or attempt to pass separate legislation through the appropriations process. the latter requires 60 votes, while a rescission request needs only a simple majority.
“DOGE is literally one of the most popular government initiatives in history. 73% of americans say they support cutting government waste…the GOP won’t vote on it I can’t believe this,”
Matt van Swol, former government scientist
