Flu Cases in New York City Surge, Risk Level Deemed ‘High’ by CDC

Flu Cases Surge in New York City

According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), the number of flu cases in New York City has reached a critical level, with a 25% increase in just one week. The total number of people infected with the flu in the city was reported to be 2,053 as of the 25th of last month, marking a sharp increase for three consecutive weeks.

Furthermore, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has classified New York City’s flu level as ‘high’ for the second consecutive week. This surge in flu cases is the fastest increase seen in the past five years, except for the outbreak last year.

While New York State has also experienced an increase in flu cases, with 4,061 reported on November 25th, New Jersey has seen a rise in flu patients as well, though it remains within CDC standards for an ‘average’ level.

In addition to the flu, the rise of various respiratory diseases such as COVID-19 and RSV has also become a concern. CDC Director Mandy Cohen noted that the country is seeing 15,000 hospitalizations and 1,000 deaths due to COVID-19 each week.

Shows a sharp increase for 3 weeks in a row

According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), on the 25th of last month, the number of people infected with the flu in New York City was 2,053. It is a 25% increase from the previous week.

In New York City, the number of infections has continued to surge over the past three weeks. It recorded an increase of 58% in the second week of November and 66% in the third week.

The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) classified New York City’s flu level as ‘high’ for the second week in a row.

With the exception of last year, when the number of flu patients exploded, the number of patients is increasing the fastest over the past five years. Between 2019 and 2021, the number of flu patients was less than half of what it is now.

In New York State, the number of flu patients is also increasing. On 25 November, the number of flu cases was 4,061, an increase of 27% from the previous week. There have been no deaths from the flu yet.

New Jersey has also seen an increase in flu patients, but it is not cause for concern. The total number of flu patients counted in the last week of November was 3,375, an increase of 42% from the previous week (2,370). According to CDC standards, it is at an ‘average’ level.

In addition to the flu, the rise in various respiratory diseases such as COVID-19 and RSV is also a problem.

CDC Director Mandy Cohen said, “Each week, 15,000 people are hospitalized and 1,000 deaths due to COVID-19 occur across the country.”
