Food Price Increase: Milk, Butter, Beef Costs Rise
Food Prices Soar: beef and Produce Lead the Charge as Rents See Modest Rise
Auckland, NZ – New data released by stats NZ paints a clear picture of rising living costs, with food prices experiencing a significant jump, especially in the meat, poultry, and fish category. Beef prices, specifically, have seen substantial increases, impacting household budgets across the nation.
Annual food Price Surge Driven by Meat and Produce
The latest figures reveal a concerning trend for consumers, with overall food prices climbing. “years ago, an increase of over 120%,” Growden said. This substantial annual increase is largely attributed to the rising cost of essential protein sources.
Beef Prices Bite into Budgets
The meat, poultry, and fish group saw its prices pushed upwards by higher costs for beef steak, which increased by a notable 22.3%, and beef mince, up by 15.6%. For consumers, this translates directly to their grocery bills. Growden highlighted that the average cost for 1kg of beef mince reached $21.73 in June, a significant jump from $18.80 a year prior. This steep rise in beef prices is a key factor contributing to the overall food price inflation.

Food Prices Up Monthly: A Continued Trend
the inflationary pressure isn’t just an annual phenomenon; it’s also evident in month-on-month comparisons. Compared to May of this year, food prices in June increased by 1.2%.This follows a 0.5% rise observed in may 2025 compared to April, indicating a persistent upward trend in grocery costs.
Fruit, Vegetables, and Groceries Contribute to Monthly Rise
The monthly increase was primarily driven by higher prices for fruit and vegetables, which saw a 5% jump, and grocery items, up by 0.8%. Stats NZ pointed to specific items as key drivers of these increases. “More expensive tomatoes, capsicum, and broccoli drove the increase for fruit and vegetables, while higher prices for boxed chocolates and eggs drove the increase for grocery foods,” the agency stated. These everyday staples becoming more expensive further squeeze household budgets.
Rents Also Experienced an Annual Increase
alongside the concerning food price data, Stats NZ also released figures on rent prices, revealing a more modest, yet still present, annual increase.
Rent Prices See Second Lowest Annual Rise Since 2011
Rents increased by 2.6% in the 12 months to June 2025. This follows a 2.8% increase in the 12 months to May 2025. While still an increase, this figure represents the second lowest annual rent price rise recorded since October 2011, when rent prices saw a 2.5% increase. This suggests that while housing costs are still climbing, the pace of rent increases has slowed compared to previous periods.
