According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the 23rd, Minister Cho attended and spoke at a session of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on the 21st and 22nd (local time) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on topics such as ‘The G20’s role in geopolitical conflicts’ and ‘Reforming global governance’.

Minister Cho asked the G20 to play a leading role in ensuring that the international community responds firmly and united to North Korea’s nuclear and missile development, series of provocations, North Korea-Russia military cooperation, and violations of UN Security Council resolutions United .

He mentioned that North Korea is developing nuclear weapons and missiles at the expense of the human rights of its citizens, and pointed out that security issues such as North Korean nuclear weapons and North Korean human rights are related to two sides of the same coin. ‘

It was also submitted that the government is making efforts to restore peace and rebuild Ukraine based on the ‘Ukraine Peace Unity Initiative’ announced last year.

Recently, Korea joined the Ukraine Donor Cooperation Platform (MDCP), an advisory body for reconstruction support to Ukraine led by the G7, as a new member.

Minister Cho also emphasized that the G20 should go beyond conflict over geopolitical issues and strengthen cooperation on global issues such as climate change, responding to digital transformation, and sustainable development.

Reform multilateral institutions such as multilateral development banks (MDBs), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the United Nations to respond effectively to global issues, saying that there is no alternative to multilateralism to solve complex crises such as change in the climate, pandemics, inequality, and conflict He emphasized that it must be done.

The G20 is a consultative body where developed countries, represented by the G7, and major emerging market countries discuss international economic cooperation.

Although it is not originally a forum to deal with political, military and security issues, the geopolitical conflict structure is highlighted in the recent G20 meeting as participating countries span various camps, including Western developed countries such as the United States , China, Russia, etc. Global South (developing countries in the Southern Hemisphere).

While attending the G20, Minister Cho held separate bilateral meetings with Canada, Indonesia, Japan, Portugal, France, Germany, Argentina and Italy, and also met with the Secretary-General of UNESCO.

In addition, they decided to join the efforts of the international community to restore security in Haiti by attending the ‘Rise to the Challenge on Haiti’ held jointly by the United States, Brazil, and the United Nations.
