West Kalimantan Prioritizes Swift Action to Combat Forest and Land Fires
Pontianak, West Kalimantan – in a decisive move to curb escalating environmental threats, Minister of Surroundings Hanif Faisol Nurofiq has declared the acceleration of forest and land fire (Karhutla) handling as a paramount priority for west Kalimantan. The minister stressed the critical need for speed and accuracy in extinguishing fires, particularly those on vulnerable peatlands, to prevent widespread ecosystem damage and air pollution.
Urgent Response Key to Preventing Catastrophe
“Speed and accuracy are crucial,” Minister Nurofiq stated during a Coordination Meeting on Forest and Land Fire Control in Pontianak. “When a fire occurs, it must be extinguished immediately to prevent it from developing into a major fire, especially on peatlands, which require remarkable efforts to control.”
The minister emphasized that an early fire response is the moast effective strategy for mitigating the detrimental impacts of karhutla, including severe air pollution, irreversible ecosystem damage, and the rapid spread of fires across fragile landscapes.
West Kalimantan Faces Critically important Fire Challenges
The urgency of the minister’s directive is underscored by the alarming statistics from West Kalimantan.As of July 31, the province had detected approximately 1,500 hotspots, with 297 identified as high-confidence points indicating active fires.
In total, 258 fires have been recorded, impacting 989 hectares of land. These fires have predominantly occurred in mineral and peatland areas across the districts of Sambas, Mempawah, and Kubu Raya, highlighting the widespread nature of the threat.
Integrated Measures Deployed
Since the declaration of the Forest and Land Fire Emergency Alert Status on April 17,authorities have been implementing coordinated,integrated measures to combat the blazes. These efforts include the deployment of three water-bombing aircraft in Mempawah and kubu Raya since July 27.
The aerial operations are complemented by extensive ground patrols, weather modification operations, and direct fire extinguishing efforts carried out by various government agencies and local stakeholders.
Zero Tolerance for Arson and Strict Law Enforcement
Minister Nurofiq reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to a zero-tolerance policy for forest and land burning. He assured that all violations, whether committed by individuals or corporate concession holders, will be prosecuted without exception. This firm stance aims to deter future instances of illegal land clearing through fire.
Riau Success Story Inspires West Kalimantan
The Head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), Suharyanto, lauded Minister Nurofiq’s leadership, citing the prosperous and rapid mitigation of forest and land fires in Riau Province. Suharyanto noted that the Riau situation was brought under control within five days of the minister’s arrival, showcasing the effectiveness of his proactive approach.
“I appreciate the commitment and synergy demonstrated by Minister Nurofiq and his ranks in handling forest and land fires,” Suharyanto remarked. “We hope that a similar pattern can be replicated in West Kalimantan.”
The BNPB chief expressed optimism that the strategies proven effective in Riau can be adapted and implemented in West Kalimantan to achieve similar positive outcomes in protecting the region’s environment and the well-being of its residents.
