Lebanon’s Former Central Bank Governor, Riyad Salameh, Faces Trial for Financial Crimes
Beirut’s Acting First Investigating Judge, Bilal Halawi, issued an arrest warrant for Riyad Salameh, the former governor of the Bank of Lebanon, after his interrogation session ended, and another session was scheduled for Thursday.
Salameh’s first trial was held last week after he was detained and charged with financial crimes, including theft of government funds.
Amid chants of condemnation, the former governor of the Bank of Lebanon, Riyad Salameh, arrived at the Justice Palace in Beirut for the first session since he was detained last week and charged with financial crimes, including theft of government funds.
Salameh’s media office confirmed that he would not comment publicly on the case in accordance with the law. The office added in a statement that Salameh previously cooperated in more than 20 criminal investigations in Beirut and Mount Lebanon and has been cooperating with investigations since his arrest.
The charges brought against Salameh last week are separate from earlier allegations of financial crimes linked to Fourie Associates, a company owned by Raja Salameh, the brother of the former governor of the Bank of Lebanon.
The brothers were accused of taking advantage of Fury to embezzle $330 million in public funds in the form of commissions. The brothers deny any wrongdoing.
