Two-time F1 world champion, Mika Hakkinen, suspects that Charles Leclerc played a key role in Mattia Binotto’s resignation and departure from Ferrari.
Mattia Binotto has submitted his resignation after four years at the helm of Scuderia Ferrari as Formula 1 team principal and 28 years at Ferrari.
Charles Leclerc has responded to the departure of Mattia Binotto by posting a message on social media. Expressing his gratitude to the former team boss, he claimed that his “esteem and respect” for Binotto had not diminished over the years.
Since then Charles Leclerc, who was a championship contender early in the season, has been surprised by a number of Ferrari mistakes.
But Mika Hakkinen doubts rumors suggesting that five-time Grand Prix winner Charles Leclerc forced Mattia Binotto to be sacked, despite being frustrated by Ferrari’s inability to improve his operations.
“I don’t know about that,” Mika Hakkinen told Sky Sports News.
“I always thought when I was racing, it’s not about whether you like someone or not, it’s about how good they are, how committed they are, what how intelligent and smart they are.”
“It doesn’t matter if you like it or not. It doesn’t stop you from succeeding.”
“I doubt it’s a true story because you have to work in a team and respect people’s talent, knowledge and commitment to the sport.”
“Very sad. I think he (Binotto) is a great personality, a great man.”
Ferrari has yet to name Mattia Binotto’s successor, but Alfa Romeo F1 team principal Fred Vasseur, who coached Charles Leclerc during his formative years, is considered the frontrunner.
“Formula 1 is a very complex sport,” added Hakkinen.
“You need three or four very talented people to run a team and make it successful.”
“Not just one man or one woman can run a team.”
“It takes a lot of individuals, different characters, different talents, to contribute to the success of the team.”
