Former judge Chenalova condemned the prosecution for BGN 20,000.

The prosecutor’s office has been ordered to pay BGN 20,000 in compensation to former judge Rumiana Chenalova, it was announced the specialized edition lex.bg. The decision is of the Court of Appeal in Sofia and is not final. However, the second instance increased the compensation five times.

Chenalova was a judge in the Sofia City Court and was considered to be a close friend of former chairwoman Vladimira Yaneva. In 2015, tapes emerged of their conversations in which he discussed the backroom of the judiciary and government. Later, former Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, whose name was also mentioned, called the judges “the two khakis”.

Chenalova’s problems with the prosecutor’s office began after in 2014 the then French ambassador to our country Xavier Lapert de Caban announced that there were “rotten apples” in the Bulgarian judicial system. At that time, the judge was hearing a case regarding the bankruptcy of subsidiary companies of the French company Belvedere, and the diplomat suspected that an attempt was being made to privatize the companies with the help of the court.

The prosecutor’s office brought charges against Chenalova, but they were related to another commercial case. In addition, she is also accused of delaying the prosecution’s protest in the case of the double murder at the Solo discotheque.

At first instance, Chenalova completely acquitted the suspect of the crimes, Iliyan Todorov. After the case was over, he was released without bail and fled the country. The prosecutor’s office claimed that it filed a protest demanding that Todorov be restricted, but it was delayed by the judge. Subsequently, Todorov was finally sentenced to life imprisonment, and in 2023, ten years after his escape, he was arrested in Uzbekistan. He was recently extradited to our country and is serving his sentence in prison in Plovdiv.

Chenalova was completely acquitted of the charge for the “Solo” case. She was found guilty of tampering with a court record in another trial, but that was deemed a minor case.

The former judge filed a lawsuit against the prosecutor’s office for BGN 200,000. At first instance, the city court awarded her BGN 4,000. The appellate court increased the amount to BGN 20,000.

Three years ago, she was a deputy candidate of the “Vazrazhdane” party.
