Former Manchester United Star Jesse Lingard Faces Skepticism Over Transfer to FC Seoul

[OSEN=노진주 기자] “FC Seoul-bound Jesse Lingard (31) is wasting time.”

Lingard attended the press conference to join FC Seoul at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on the afternoon of the 8th and expressed his expectations for continuing his career as a player in Korea. However, people in England are still skeptical about Lingard’s decision to go to Korea.

Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan said on the UK’s ‘Talk Sports’ program on the 9th that Lingard was ‘wasting time’.

“Lingard is wasting his career and his chances,” said Jordan. “It was the same at Nottingham Forest. And Lingard spent a lot of time improving his appearance even when he played for the world famous football team called Manchester United. There is no doubt that he is a good player. “But now it’s a waste of time.”

Lingard joined FC Seoul on the 8th. Detailed terms, such as the period of the contract, were not known, but British media such as ‘Sky Sports’ previously announced that Lingard was transferring to FC Seoul on a two-year contract with an option for a one-year extension.

Lingard is a member of Manchester United, a world famous football club, and has been active in English professional football for 13 years since his professional debut.

He recorded 29 goals and 14 assists in 182 games in the English Premier League alone, playing for Manchester United, West Ham United, and Nottingham Forest. Lingard has also been selected for the England national team and has the experience of leading his country to the semi-finals by participating in the Russia 2018 World Cup.

Lingard became irresistible after leaving Nottingham Forest during last summer’s transfer window. He was said to be training at Inter Miami in August last year, and later there were rumors of a transfer to West Ham, but no contract was finalised.

Afterwards, in September last year, it appeared that a transfer would take place with the announcement that he would train at Al-Etifah in the Saudi Arabian Pro League, but this did not even materialise.

Surprisingly, the place he chose was FC Seoul.

As well as being a member of the ‘popular team’ Manchester United, Lingard is also a player familiar to Korean football fans with his unique celebrations. Because of his unique and cheerful movements of blowing the flute after scoring a goal, it is very likely that football fans have seen his celebration at least once.

He, who had followed the elite course, was suspected of coming to Seoul to expand his personal business. Lingard currently runs an esports and clothing business. Lingard has reportedly signed a content collaboration partnership with a domestic esports team.

In the press conference, Lingard drew a line saying, “Business and football are separate things.”

Regarding the decisive reason for coming to FC Seoul, “There were many offers last summer. However, the reason I came here is that other clubs only talk about the contract verbally, but FC Seoul wrote the contract themselves (from start to finish) and came all the way to Manchester where I am . “At that moment, I decided on FC Seoul,” he explained.

However, despite his explanation, there are still people who are confused by Lingard’s decision and those who look at it with unfavorable eyes.
