Former National Team Coach Park Jong-hwan Passes Away at 86: A Legend in Korean Football

Former national team coach Park Jong-hwan, who led Korea to the semi-finals of the 1983 World Youth Football Championship in Mexico, passed away on the evening of the 7th at the age of 86. Born in Chuncheon, Park had been residing in a nursing hospital prior to his demise. The bereaved family revealed that he contracted COVID-19, which eventually led to difficulties in breathing. Rushed to the emergency room, he developed sepsis and fell into a coma. The funeral service for Park was held at the funeral hall of Soonchunhyang University Hospital in Yongsan-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 8th.

Park’s contributions to Korean football extend beyond his tenure as a national team coach. Following his remarkable achievement in the 1983 tournament, where he guided the team to the semi-finals, Park assumed the role of founding coach for Ilhwa Chunma in 1989. Under his leadership, the team clinched three consecutive regular league victories, solidifying his status as a legendary figure in Korean football. Subsequently, Park held key positions in various football clubs, including being the founding coach of Daegu FC, head coach of Seongnam FC, and founding general manager of K3 Yeoju FC. His educational background includes graduating from Chuncheon High School (31st class) and Kyung Hee University.

Sadly, it came to light that Park faced financial difficulties after retirement. In response, the alumni association of Chuncheon High School generously raised funds to support him during these challenging times.

Park Jong-hwan’s funeral will take place at the Eden Park burial site in Namyangju at 11:30 am on the 10th. His passing marks a significant loss for the football community, as his legacy as a talented coach and dedicated mentor will forever be remembered.

After reaching the semi-finals of the 4th World Youth Football Championship held in Mexico in 1983, former coach Park took over as the founding coach of Ilhwa Chunma in 1989 and achieved the great feat of winning three regular league games in a row. He was then appointed coach of the national team in 1996. He is a legendary figure in Korean football who has since served as the founding coach of Daegu FC, the head coach of Seongnam FC, and the founding general manager of K3 Yeoju FC.
