Former US president Jimmy Carter, 98, in hospital

A former peanut farmer who led the country for four years. He faced domestic economic woes and the Iran hostage crisis that ended after he left office. Carter also played a key role in implementing the Camp David Accords, leading to a major peace agreement between Egypt and Israel.

He left office in the 1980 election as voters accepted Republican challenger Ronald Reagan. A former actor and California governor, Carter remains highly regarded after leaving office. He has worked passionately for decades on humanitarian activism. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 in recognition. “His relentless efforts to find a peaceful solution to international conflicts to develop democracy and human rights and to promote economic and social development.”

Carter and his wife Rosa Lin, who they married in 1946, had four children.
