Kim Yong, former vice president of the Democratic Institute for Democracy, sentenced to prison in the first trial on charges of illegally receiving funds for Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung’s primaries and receiving bribes, was released on bail on the 8th and will be tried without detention. It has been 160 days since he was arrested in the first trial in November last year.

On this day, the 13th Criminal Division of the Seoul High Court (Chief Justice Baek Kang-jin) accepted the bail request of former Vice President Kim, who was indicted on charges of violating the Political Fund Law. Bail was set at 50 million won.

The court established the conditions for bail, including ▲undertaking not to destroy evidence, ▲residence restriction to one’s home, ▲ban on contact with investigative witnesses or people involved in the case, ▲ban on leaving the country without permission and ▲document seizure an electronic device for real-time location tracking.

Former Deputy Director Kim was released on bail in May last year after he was granted bail during the first trial, but upon sentencing in the first trial in November of the same year, the court canceled the bail and ordered a new detention, saying: “The need to guarantee further defense rights is not high.”

Former Vice President Kim was put on trial on charges of receiving illegal campaign funds worth 847 million won from lawyer Nam Wook through former Seongnam Urban Development Corporation acting president Yoo Dong-gyu and the lawyer Jeong Min-yong between April and August 2021.

He is also accused of receiving 190 million won from former acting director Yoo in exchange for providing benefits related to the Daejeon-dong development project while serving as a permanent member of the Seongnam City Council’s urban construction committee since February 2013 to April 2014.

The First District Court sentenced former deputy director Kim to five years in prison and a fine of 70 million won. Additionally, another 670 million won was ordered. The court found that these were “a series of corruption offenses involving collusion and receiving money via licenses over a long period of time”.
