All 17 british companies participating in the six-month trial have decided to continue the arrangement, wich includes either a four-day week or a nine-day fortnight, while maintaining full salaries for employees.
The trial, organized by the 4 Day Week Foundation, aims to encourage more businesses to adopt shorter work weeks. This initiative builds on a larger pilot program in 2022 involving almost 3,000 employees, where 56 of 61 companies reduced their hours from a five-day week.
The 4 Day Week Foundation hopes to capitalize on the ancient shift from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when trade union campaigns led to the creation of the two-day weekend, moving away from the traditional six-day work week.
Advocates and some economists argue that the four-day week can benefit workers by reducing mental health strain and businesses by increasing staff motivation and improving recruitment and retention. Researchers at Boston College found “extremely positive” results for workers, with 62% reporting less burnout and 45% feeling “more satisfied with life,” according to a poll of 89 participants.
