Four construction workers died and three others were injured on April 3, 2026, after inhaling suspected toxic gas at a high-rise construction site in South Jakarta.

The incident occurred at a project site located on Jalan TB Simatupang in Tanjung Barat, Jagakarsa. Authorities report that the accident took place in the building’s basement during an operation involving a clean water storage tank.

Police stated that the incident began when a supervisor instructed four workers to drain the water storage tank, which is approximately three meters deep. Upon opening the tank, the four workers suddenly collapsed and fell inside.

Three other workers attempted to rescue their colleagues but also fell into the tank after entering the confined space without proper safety equipment. The event caused panic among other site personnel, who worked to evacuate the seven victims from the tank.

All seven workers were initially transported to Pasar Rebo Regional General Hospital. Four of the workers were pronounced dead, while the three survivors were transferred to Fatmawati Hospital for intensive care to treat breathing difficulties.

The victims who died were identified as:

  • Muhammad Fauzi, 20, from Bandung
  • Yana Nugraha, 33, from Subang
  • Mawi, 63, from Cianjur
  • Tatang Sonjaya, 64, from Subang

AKBP Mohamad Iskandarsyah, the Head of Criminal Investigation Unit of the South Jakarta Police, confirmed that the four bodies are currently undergoing autopsy. The bodies were transferred to the Kramat Jati Police Hospital morgue for further examination as part of the investigation.

Witness accounts support the theory of toxic gas exposure. Muhammad Akip, a nearby resident who attempted to assist in the rescue, stated that he experienced extreme heat and shortness of breath when he approached the tank.
