Bourg-lès-Valence, France – French authorities have arrested six individuals in connection with the kidnapping of a magistrate and her mother, an ordeal that lasted approximately 30 hours and involved a ransom demand payable in cryptocurrency. The arrests, including that of a minor, follow the discovery of the two women injured in a garage in the Drôme department on Friday morning.

The 35-year-old magistrate and her 67-year-old mother were reportedly abducted overnight between Wednesday and Thursday from a town located 90 kilometers from Bourg-lès-Valence. Investigators found evidence of forced entry at the magistrate’s home and discovered bloodstains at the scene, triggering a large-scale police operation involving 160 officers.

According to Lyon prosecutor Thierry Dran, the magistrate’s partner, an entrepreneur active in the cryptocurrency sector since the late 2010s, received a message and a photograph of his partner from the kidnappers demanding a ransom in cryptocurrency. The captors allegedly threatened to inflict serious harm on the women if the ransom was not paid promptly, though the specific amount demanded has not been disclosed.

The women managed to free themselves and alert authorities by banging on the garage door, prompting a neighbor to intervene. They were subsequently found injured and transported to a local hospital, where their lives are not currently considered to be in danger.

Four men and one woman were initially detained, with three arrests occurring overnight and two more on Sunday morning. A sixth suspect, a minor, was apprehended on Sunday afternoon. Two of those arrested overnight were attempting to board a bus to Spain when they were apprehended, according to a source close to the investigation.

Authorities are continuing to search for additional suspects, and the woman in custody is reported to be the partner of one of the male suspects. The investigation is focusing on the potential link between the kidnapping and the magistrate’s partner’s involvement in the cryptocurrency industry.

This incident comes amid a growing trend of kidnappings and extortion attempts targeting individuals involved in the cryptocurrency sector in France. In January 2025, David Balland, co-founder of the cryptocurrency firm Ledger, was kidnapped, and his captors reportedly demanded a substantial ransom and even mutilated him by cutting off a finger. Balland was released the following day, and his girlfriend was found tied up in a car near Paris.

The recent surge in such crimes highlights the increasing risks associated with the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency landscape and the potential for criminals to exploit the anonymity and borderless nature of digital currencies. French authorities have been grappling with how to effectively address these challenges and protect individuals involved in the cryptocurrency industry from becoming targets of criminal activity.

The investigation into the kidnapping of the magistrate and her mother is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the full extent of the criminal network involved and the motives behind the abduction. The case has raised concerns about the security of public officials and the vulnerability of individuals connected to the cryptocurrency sector in France.

The incident underscores the growing sophistication of criminal enterprises operating in the digital age and the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in tracking and prosecuting these crimes. The use of cryptocurrency as a means of ransom payment further complicates investigations, as tracing digital transactions can be difficult and time-consuming.

The French government is likely to face increased pressure to strengthen security measures and enhance law enforcement capabilities to combat the rising threat of cryptocurrency-related crime. This may involve increased investment in cybersecurity infrastructure, enhanced collaboration with international law enforcement agencies, and the development of new regulations to govern the cryptocurrency industry.
