Updated May 25, 2025
A fire at a substation in Nice, France, caused a widespread power outage affecting at least 45,000 homes early Sunday. This incident marks the second major power disruption in the French Riviera region in as many days, prompting authorities to investigate suspected sabotage.
The blaze erupted around 2 a.m.local time, impacting Nice Airport, the city’s tramway, and neighboring communities such as Saint-Laurent-du-Var and Cagnes-sur-Mer. Power was eventually restored later in the morning. Police investigating the Nice incident reported finding “tire tracks” and a “broken” door at the affected substation, according to local media.
The incident follows a significant blackout in Cannes the previous day, which interrupted the international film festival. Officials are also investigating that incident as a possible arson attack on a substation, which left approximately 160,000 homes without power. Several film screenings were disrupted before organizers switched to backup generators.
“strongly denounced” the “malicious acts that affect our contry,” Christian Estrosi, nice Mayor said on X.
While no direct link has been established between the Nice and Cannes incidents, authorities are taking the situation seriously. Nice prosecutor Damien Martinelli told AFP news agency that investigations are underway to clarify the extent of the damage and the manner in which the act was committed. Estrosi stated that security would be reinforced around Nice’s electrical sites.
What’s next
An investigation into ”organized arson” is underway.Authorities will be working to determine if the two incidents are connected and to prevent future attacks on critical infrastructure.
