Boualem Sansal Sentenced to Prison in Algeria

The Dar El Beida Criminal Court in Algiers sentenced Boualem Sansal on Thursday, March 27, to 5 years in prison and a fine of 500,000 dinars (approximately 3,500⁣ euros). Sansal, a Franco-Algerian ⁤writer, has been detained in Algeria ⁣since Nov. 16,⁢ 2024. His trial, which took place last week, was shorter than many expected.

The brevity of the hearing,lasting about 20 ​minutes,and the investigating judge’s decision to bring Sansal,80,before ‍a criminal court rather than a correctional one,were both unexpected,according to the Arabic-speaking newspaper ⁢ Chorrouk
